Online Marketing Is A Lot Like Playing Jenga

by Brent Hartman on June 5, 2009

jengaIt’s getting easier to explain to friends, family and clients what we “do” in our industry as people get more savvy. But there are still people who struggle to understand how online marketing works. In addition to working at Sitewire I also coach youth sports. Kids love asking questions and recently some of my younger ones asked me what I did besides coach. So, having been put on the spot, I came up with (what I thought was) a pretty good analogy to help them get it. I think it might help the concept “click” with other people as well, so here it is:

Basically, think of building an online presence as playing “Jenga” and then it’s easy to explain to anybody who knows the game! There are a ton of pieces that can be stacked in a variety of different ways. There are the tried and true standard ways that almost always work and then there are creative, out of the ordinary ways that can work as well. But be careful, because if you remove the wrong piece the whole tower might fall. Add too much carelessly and you lose again. Some pieces can be moved from place to place with little impact and others you know you don’t want to touch. Our job is to build these Jenga towers of online presence for our clients to make sure that the pieces fit together and don’t fall over – pretty simple right?

What do you think? What other game analogies can we make and what is the best analogy for our industry? Twister? Mouse Trap? Candyland? Share your ideas in the comments!
