Click the Vid: YouTube PPC Overlay Ads

by admin on August 7, 2009

YouTube has now given organizations the ability to add a PPC overlay on top of their YouTube videos. This is an excellent method to drive traffic to your landing page or Web site via the videos. Previously, this would have been accomplished by having a link contained within the ‘more info’ section.

How do I see this working?  Well, I can imagine organizations that have successful, funny or viral commercials could now put these on YouTube, with a PPC overlay and direct traffic to their Web site.

I can also see charitable organizations benefiting from this immensely, and this is the example that YouTube/Google gave via Techcrunch as they announced the release of this feature (see screenshot below).

This feature earned Charity:water $10,000 in profit in one day, which for any organization is an amazing feat. In order to benefit from this, you obviously need to promote your videos on YouTube, which can be done through their interface. Promoting a video is very similar to PPC but it only relates to videos in YouTube itself.

I think this will be an excellent way to drive more traffic and hopefully conversions, but like any video, it still has to be informative and interesting in order to grab attention.

Have you clicked on any of these overlay ads? Do you use them? Would you like to use them? How has it affected you?

Let me know if you would like to discuss strategy and how this can integrate into your current marketing efforts.
