Google Launches Local Extensions

by Andrew Freeman on August 19, 2009

Recently, Google has announced the launch of Google Local Extensions to their Pay Per Click (PPC) arsenal. Many companies are wondering what this is and how it will affect their industry.

Google Local Extensions allows Sitewire to dynamically add business addresses to our clients PPC campaigns. This feature is gradually being rolled out across advertisers, but will eventually be open to all Google Adwords advertisers. Google has not yet given a timeframe for when the roll out is expected to be complete.

“How does this help my brand?”

In a similar vein to how geographically targeted ads show the name of the state underneath the PPC ads, Local Extensions actually shows a business address. As can be seen in the example below, this allows the PPC ad to stand out while informing the searcher of the nearest physical location to where they are searching from.

I think this will benefit a brand in several ways:

  1. If someone is searching for a local store or restaurant, they can be informed of the address without needing to click through to the Web Site.
  2. It can allow a national organization to appear local.
  3. Conversely, it can allow local businesses to compete against national businesses.
