Google Buys DoubleClick for $3.1 Billion in Cash
- Bret Giles
Last month, Google announced its intent to purchase a digital marketing and services technology provider, DoubleClick. In and of itself not spectacular news, but to the online advertising industry this is one with mighty repercussions.
When Sitewire places display advertising (sometimes referred to as banners), DoubleClick provides ad management tools that we and the site owner use to "place" that ad. DoubleClick software controls the ad creative itself, where it is placed, when it is placed and reports on how it performs. Likewise, when Sitewire places search advertising (also known as pay-per-click or pay-per-action), Google provides industry-leading tools that relevantly "place" that search ad when, how and where we request.
By purchasing DoubleClick, Google becomes the leading player in managing all major forms of advertising on the Internet. While this means Google should be much better able to hone advertising to a very specific target, serving an ad in context to the user's actions, it also means Google will increasingly know more about what you and I do online as users. After all, it already stores 3.5 billion queries a month and has a history of our habits dating back years, some of it in aggregate and some at a personal level.
In this instance, the acquisition is probably good for us as marketers, but the verdict is out as it relates to us as Internet users. Google emphatically states that "you can make money without doing evil." We all know they're making money; as for the rest, we'll have to rely on faith.
