Welcome 2008!
You've read all the top 10's, seen the best of 2007 lists, now here's an idea of what was heard around the Sitewire office:
"Open and Green will be the cliché buzzwords of 2008. Conditions of the housing market, interest rates, inflation and a touchy stock market have led to a state of increased consumer concern. In addition, fossil fuel energy prices have continued to rise, so consumers will be looking for a reason to feel good. Green products in the form of fuels, housing materials, clothing and other goods provide just that. In addition, a trend toward "open" collaborative products such as Wikipedia, MySpace and YouTube will creep into other applications that enhance the way consumers search for, research, network and ultimately interact with other people and products online." - Scott Kaufmann
"Wiki and technologies that leverage the collective power of the community will continue to impact and change the online experience in 2008. Wikipedia.org now has over seven million articles (more than ten times the content of Encyclopedia Britannica with roughly the same accuracy according to ADWEEK) and new human powered, open model search engines are launching, like Mahalo and Wikia Search. In a true democratic nature, tapping into the "Wisdom of Crowds" is a trend which will continue to return value and prosperity to the community in 2008." - Josh Yeager
Some thoughts from our design, development and trend guru, Jim Jeffers:
"Mobile Web usage will come into its own in 2008. With 2007's advent of the iPhone followed by the introduction of Google's Android platform, the mobile Web medium is on fire. The release of the upcoming iPhone SDK to developers in February will only throw gasoline onto the inferno."
"OpenID will take off. The single login for all domains approach was recently adopted by AOL so all AIM accounts could effectively be used as OpenID. Follow that with this month's announcement that Yahoo! is converting all of its accounts to OpenID, and you now have a widespread customer base for the development community to support."
"Web standards will see significant gains. Microsoft is on the ball, following IE7's release they are already set to release IE8 this year. The best part is that IE8 already passes the ACID2 test set forth by the W3C. As Microsoft is still the vast majority leader in Web browser market share, its commitment to modern Web standards is motivating the entire standards community to adopt usage of newer tools. More importantly, it's also encouraging stagnant W3C working groups to get organized and finalize the new standards for CSS3 and HTML5."
